In response to the increased demand in alcohol-based sanitizers, DOT has issued temporary relief for the road transport of such products.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the USA has seen an increase in the demand for products used for sanitization purposes. Many of these products contain alcohol and may be considered a hazardous material for transportation as per the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR, 49 CFR Parts 171-180). The temporary amendment provides regulatory relief on the transport of hand sanitizers in single and combination packages up to 8 gallons, as well as larger packages greater than 8 gallons but not exceeding 119 gallons, the relief provided is for the highway mode only.
